Student-Owned Computing: Buying a New Computer/Laptop

The IT Team for the School of Engineering Practice and Technology recommends that all incoming students own a desktop, laptop, or similarly powerful tablet. If you are planning to purchase one, we’d like to offer the following advice and guidance.

4 Year Programs
Biotechnology Automation Systems Engineering Technology Automotive & Vehicle Technologies
CPU: 2.4GHz or better

RAM: 16GB+ HDD: 512GB+ SSD Example: Asus Vivobook Go

CPU: 2.4GHz or better base

RAM: 16GB+ (32 Recommended) HDD: 512GB+ SSD/NVMe nVidia Graphics with 2GB or more dedicated memory Example: MSI GF65

CPU: 2.6GHz or better

RAM: 32GB+ HDD: 512GB+ (1TB NVMe recommended) nVidia Graphics with 4GB or more dedicated memory Example: HP Victus

Graduate and DCP Programs
CPU Intel i5 or i7 processor 10th generation and newer (Or AMD equivalent) of 2.0 GHz or better
Minimum RAM 8 GB
Recommended RAM At least 16GB
Optical Drive Optional
Minimum Storage 256 GB Solid State Drive (SSD)
Recommended Storage 512 GB or Larger Solid State Drive (SSD)
